A Great Day

When Max turned two in September, he wasn't talking much. Today, five months later, there isn't much he doesn't say. I love that he can communicate with me and I adore our conversations. I understand 99.9% of what he says, not sure if anyone else understands him at all! It all happened so quickly. He went from calling Chloe- Kelly, to loudly expressing his wants and needs, making sure his new found voice is heard.

As I was prepping him for bed last night, he says to me, "I had a great day, mama". I was so taken aback by his words I had to repeat them to make sure that's what he said. When I asked him "did you say you had a great day buddy?" he said, UH-HUH and began listing all the things we did.

He may have meshed all of the weeks events into one day, but it wasn't that he articulated that he had a great day that got me so emotional. What I heard is that he's happy. All of my worries in that moment melted away. I am doing okay. I am a good mommy. If only for that moment, in the bathroom with my baby boy, it felt so good to know I'm getting something right. It was the reassurance I needed.

As I laid him down in his little bed and kissed him goodnight, I whispered in his sleepy little ear, Mama had a great day too, Max.

I couldn't have been happier in that moment.

Love that boy.

  4. Hey stopping by from SITS. My son had some speech issues when he was one too. After some therapy he is fine and now at 3yrs old, he can't stop talking. When you hear what is on their mind it's just bliss.

  7. {Melinda} So sweet! Proof positive you're doing a great job, mom! Reminds me of when my daughter was four and told me, "I love my life!" She's 15 now and isn't quite so high on life all the time -- but I'm not taking all the blame for that! :)

  10. Such a beautiful post. Grandpa said our oldest wasn't talking, so did everybody else. He took a recorder and held it to her mouth and she was talking!

We discovered she was talking in the back of her throat and taught her how to talk so others could hear her. Momma knows best or this time momma hears best.

Enjoy your SITS day but even more important, enjoy every day with your children.

  13. Ugh! Love this! It's moments like that that every Mommy needs! I hate it when I have those days feeling like I'm just a terrible mom, because work commitments got in the way, or something else that has pulled me away from those precious moments with my little one. We all need moments like that to know that we are doing right by them. Thank you for sharing this!

    1. I know! I'm always feeling guilty! I hate feeling that way. This was definitely a day where I needed to hear exactly what he told me. I better watch him...he may be a sweet talker one day! LOL

My son grabs me around my head (wrapping his arm around it) and says "I love ya ma"! It KILLS me every time!!!

      Just wait!

  18. Hurrah! No better way to celebrate your SITS day than with your boy's lively joy at being yours. I love that he told you all this at bedtime. (And I love his haircut!!)

  19. Tara - This is beautiful! Thanks for sharing! As a teacher it is really encouraging to read about a parent's love for their child! It is so easy to only see the parents that lack this attention that unfortunately many kids go without! What a lucky boy!
