My kids know I take protecting their skin seriously. So does my friend Marianne who makes fun of my sunblock antics! Chloe doesn't want to get sunburned so she is really good at letting me do my thing! One of her cousins got a wicked one last summer and she hasn't forgotten it since! She'll say, "Ma, sunblock is important so I don't get sunburned like Jackie", every time I apply it! Max is a pain in the ass...he screams, runs away- hides! I have gotten it down to a science so I would like to share my craft with you!
- Applying sunblock before leaving the house is a must. I do so before putting their bathing suits on. This ensures an even application that wont leave my kids with any surprise sunburn marks in areas I would have missed with their suits on. I truly think this makes a huge difference. I also think its much better chasing Max around my own house rather than looking like a crazy person chasing him elsewhere!
- Using sunblock made specifically for faces is important to me- for both my children and for myself. I love Neutrogena pure & free baby faces SPF 50+. It's ultra gentle so it doesn't burn their eyes. They haven't complained about stinging eyes once since we began using it. I actually use it too!
- I always apply a cream on their body for the first application in the house. I feel as though a cream provides a better base of protection than a spray does. I use Banana Boat Natural Reflect Baby SPF 50+. Its 100% naturally sourced, is paraben and PABA free and is as mild as water. If harsh chemicals worry you, this can ease your woes.
- I reapply with a spray throughout the day. I love Neutrogena wet skin kids SPF 70. Spraying them while they are jumping in and out of the pool or digging in the sand is much easier than applying cream! This formula was specially designed to repel water and can be applied directly to wet skin...perfect for the little beach bunny on the go!
- Always remember their ears...they can get pretty crispy if you forget!
- If you part your daughters hair- be sure to sunblock her scalp. I have burned my own one too many times so I am very careful not to with Chloe's.

This is such an important post. I'm pregnant with my first and have already stocked up on sunhats to protect his little head! Haha.
ReplyDeleteErin- I am a maniac with the sunblock! My kids refuse hats now so they are no longer an option unfortunately. When they were infants (after 6 mos) I only used California Baby sunblock. My sons skin was so sensitive and couldnt handle anything else. I'm so excited for you- when are you due?
DeleteLove this post great job even though I'm not a mother yet ( plan on having kids) I have sensitive skin and sometimes normal adult sunblock is to harsh. I actually use the banana boat for kids and Neutrogena pure baby face on my sensitive face.
ReplyDeleteYou should 100% use California Baby! They sell at Target, Buy Buy Baby or you can shop on-line. I used the regular body cream on my son too probably his first 2 years- it was the only cream he didnt have a reaction to. Their bug spray works great as well! Thank you for your comment! Come again...its not always guided toward kiddies!

I keep forgetting during a normal day, but if there's a pool around the block is on before we get there. I like the idea of doing it before the suit is on... makes sense!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. Hope to see more of you.
Thank you for stopping too!!
DeleteGreat tips! I am so adamant about reapplying every 2 hours. My husband thinks I'm insane. Not so crazy when I'm the one without sunburn!
ReplyDeleteThank you Steph!
DeleteMy husband laughs that I put 50 on....and he's always burned too!!

Oh the Daily Sunblock wars we have in our house. The running, the screaming, not to mention trying to keep a grasp on a wiggly little one once you've got them half smeared with suncream...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips, Operation Sunblock will be a little easier today!
Tara
