Sorry...we are having cereal!

Why is it, "sorry, we are having cereal for breakfast"?

I love cereal and can even eat it for lunch or dinner and not feel disappointed. I also love watching my almost 3 year old son eating cereal- it must be what a caveman would look like eating with a utensil for the first time!

I have conditioned my family to expect all out breakfasts such as homemade pancakes, french toast, omelette's - all accompanied by fresh fruit of course- EVERYDAY.

Surely, I must be BUGGIN.

I have to stop planting these high expectation seedlings in their heads. I fear I may already be in too deep.

For example, we came home from a birthday party Saturday - one where both of my kids didn't eat the pizza ( they are mini food connoisseurs and only like "their" pizzeria! Can you imagine? This is what happens being a New Yorker.) Of course they were hungry. I whipped up chicken cutlets, rice with chopped up hidden broccoli and sliced up a cucumber for them to share. I mean- why do I do this to myself? I am setting the standard way too high.

I should have given them a damn bowl of cereal. They would have been just as happy and I wouldn't have had the cleanup I had.

Lesson learned. Even though cereal is awesome and shouldn't be looked at as a compromise - cereal prevails in the future! For breakfast, lunch & sometimes...even dinner!

  1. Yeah... good luck with that! I've had a day or two when I've reverted to cereal for dinner, but the guilt... oh the guilt! So yeah... good luck with that. :)

  3. I wish! Lately, my kids will only eat foods like pizza, chicken, nuggets, etc. I wish that they would eat a little fancier stuff because maybe that would mean I would actually cook real food for myself too! But I do love a bowl of cereal anytime of day.

    1. Don't be too jealous...they don't eat everything. They have just recently started eating baked tilapia which I bread- they think that its chicken too!!

Everyday is a battle figuring out what to make.
Cereal just seems so much easier!!! Lol

      Are you going to Blogher?

  4. Your dinner sounds delish, but I agree: there's absolutely nothing wrong with breakfast for dinner!

  5. I have a similar but not identical problem in that I have become a short order cook. This goes back to the days of preparing special meals for picky toddlers who I feared would otherwose starve. My kids ate now 4, 6, and 8 and still expect this.

Tonight they get cereal! No ifs, ands, or buts...

  6. I could eat cereal for every meal of every day - and it's been this way since I was a kid. Not that I don't enjoy a good hot breakfast, but the simplicity of cereal is awesome. I think this is a good choice. And save the fancy meals for the weekend :)

    1. I don't mind whipping up eggs during the week because I feel they get their protein in that way. My kids are very picky eaters and eat their biggest meal of the day at breakfast. I'll switch it up for sure though- cereal for lunch!!

  7. I too have created high-maintenance breakfast eaters. I have never been a fan of cereal (probably because I don't like milk), so we always over indulge around here for breakfast - home-made pancakes, waffles, french toast, an assortment of egg meals, etc. So when I say to my two "It's either toast or cereal this morning" I always get 'that look'. However, there are days when they have requested cereal for lunch, and I am always extremely willing to give it to them (after the big breakfast's the last thing I feel like doing is more dishes).

    Enjoy your SITS day!!
